The NDS Gear Review: Supercard DSTWO

Supercard DSTWO Introduction

Much is written about these products on the official website and other sources - NDS-Gear are here to give a plain, short, simple review in layman's terms! Of course, the original feature list can still be found below our own review.

The Supercard DSTWO is a latecomer to the DS cards market, not being revealed to the public until November 2009, very late on in the year. The Supercard team had a history of producing emulation and homebrew devices, but nowhere near to this sophisticated a level until the new DSTWO was announced.

Supercard GBA Emulator

Real time save, built-in cheat functions and even a GBA/SNES emulator are what made the Supercard DSTWO unique and set it apart from other slot-1 flash card. These functions were not seen on a DS card before at the time that also supposed the DSi console, so the Supercard DSTWO immediately gained the status of the most advanced flash cartridge around - at a cost. Specifically, in fact, its cost! It was significantly more expensive than any other card around at a time, and therefore early adapters were almost exclusively the more hardcore homebrew enthusiasts and GBA players.

Supercard DSTWO Firmware

The firmware of the Supercard DSTWO is well thought out and beautifully programmed - this is evident in that the Supercard team produce updates (to stay compatible with the latest Nintendo firmware updates) to their cards extremely frequently compared to many other teams. For example, they were the first card to come up with a patch for the latest 1.4.3 firmware update released in July 2011 by Nintendo for the DSi and DSi XL consoles. You can download the latest Supercard DSTWO firmware on our download page.

Supercard DSTWO Technical Advances

The Supercard DSTWO's additional features over other slot-1 flash carts doesn't stop at the software and emulator, however. It boasts 32MB of built-in RAM to help load games faster and ensure efficient transfer of data between the console and the Micro-SD card. In addition to this, an extra co-processor is present to help transfer this data to make optimum use of the built-in RAM. It also supports the EZFlash 3-in-1 slot-2 solution as well as the Supercard expansion if required.

Supercard DSTWO Summary

The Supercard DSTWO is undoubtedly one of the most advanced and brilliantly made cards on the market. The cost is expensive compared to many other cards (ranging from the simple R4i to the more advanced Acekard 2i for example) but in NDS-Gear's humble opinion every penny spent is worth it.

The solidity of the Supercard DSTWO team coupled with the GBA/SNES emulator in our eyes puts this card head and shoulders above the vast majority of its competition - NDS-Gear would not hesitate to hail this card as possibly the best 'complete package' flash card available on the market.
