DS Cards Legality / What Am I Allowed To Do?
Many people have questions about the legality of adapters for sale here, and we want to clarify what can and cannot be done for the benefit of our customers. Below is a link showing, in essence, that the adapters themselves are legal but what some users of these cards do with them fall into illegal territory:
Article in The Times U.K. (PDF, 215kB) - Rob Saunders, a spokesman for Nintendo UK, describes (about 1/3 through the article) that these adapters are legal, but the purposes that some people use it for can be illegal.
- Use homebrew applications, including homebrew-games, internet-browsing applications, and may other amazing pieces of software available (both for free and for money) to convert your Nintendo DS into a wide variety of useful tools!
- Play MP3s of songs you already own (much in the same fashion as iTunes etc. where you can download/purchase tracks and own them).
- Play movies (in .dpa format) that you already own and convert yourself.
- Play backup versions of games you already own i.e. consolidate your 20 game collection onto one card for ease of transportation.
- Play backup versions of games that you do NOT already own (i.e. play a game on an adapter, that you do not own the original of).
- Play pirated or copyrighted MP3s or Movies that you do not own or have bought.
